What is a Morning Basket?

A morning basket is a collection of items and activities families of all ages can do to start their day together. The “morning basket” concept originated from the Charlotte Mason homeschooling style. A morning basket should be tailored to your family’s needs, interests, and values. There is no right or wrong way to make a morning basket. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be in the morning or in a special basket. You could use a cart, box, or whatever you have around. Make it yours!

Why Should I Have a Morning Basket?

A morning basket is a good practice because it helps you and your kids transition into your homeschooling day. Moreover, it helps build family connections, allows you to start your day with motivational topics, and allows time for reading and activities you don’t have time to get into. You could include games, art, ethics, Quran, foreign languages, journaling, exercise, affirmations, and more!

What Can A Muslim Homeschooling Family Put In A Morning Basket?

The possibilities are endless! First, evaluate what is important to your family. Is your family more structured or relaxed? Does your family like board games or poetry? Do your children need to get their wiggles out before first thing in the morning? Would you like to start with Quran recitations? Sit down and make a list of things you want to start with. This could be books, games, or discussions. You may come up with many ideas but I recommend starting with at least five small activities and being consistent. For example, Quran recitations, a picture book, daily affirmation, a gratitude journal, and a game of UNO. Remember, your morning basket doesn’t have to look like an influencer’s on YouTube or Instagram.
